The best payment ring isn't the one with the longest spec sheet. It's the one that still works when your phone is dead, your hands are wet and there's a queue behind you.

Most guides to choosing a payment ring are written by people who have never had to explain a failed payment to a worried family. I have. So this is a different sort of answer.

I founded Money Carer in 2009. We manage the everyday money of thousands of people who cannot easily manage it themselves. Our Monika platform is used by law firms, local authorities, care providers and the NHS, and in the last twelve months it processed over half a billion pounds in transactions.

RingPay came out of that work. Not out of a product roadmap. So when someone asks me what the best payment ring is, I don't reach for a spec sheet. I reach for the three questions that actually decide it.

Payment ring vs smart ring: the question is usually the wrong way round

Search "best payment ring" and you'll get rankings dominated by health rings — Oura, Samsung, Ultrahuman, RingConn — with payments bolted on, promised for a future model, or limited to a few banks in a few countries.

They're good devices. But they are sleep trackers that happen to tap. If your reason for buying is paying, you're taking on a battery, a charging dock, a subscription and an app you'll open twice, to get one feature you could have had properly for a fraction of the price.

At the other end sit anonymous ceramic NFC rings from marketplace sellers at £15. No brand behind them, no support, and nobody to call when the tokenisation stops working.

The best payment ring sits in neither camp. It does one job, does it perfectly, and has someone accountable behind it.

Test one: does it work when there's no power and no phone?

This is where most of the market quietly fails.

A RingPay ring has no battery. It never needs charging, and it never will. The chip is powered by the payment terminal itself — tap, and the reader sends a tiny burst of energy that wakes the chip just long enough to complete the transaction. That sounds like a technical footnote. It's the entire proposition.

A battery-free payment ring works at the end of a fourteen-hour day when your phone is dead. In the pool locker room. At the festival where everything else is in a tent. On the slope with gloves on. And it works for someone in supported living who will never remember to put a device on a charging cradle each night — for whom a flat battery isn't an inconvenience but a missed lunch and a phone call home.

A payment device that can run out of power will fail you on the day you most needed it. Battery-free isn't a compromise. It's the point.

Test two: is it discreet enough to wear every day?

The second thing I've learned in sixteen years is that the best assistive technology doesn't look assistive.

Nobody wants to pay with something that announces a condition, a care arrangement or a limitation. They want to tap like everyone else and get on with their day. A ring does that, because it looks like jewellery. Our payment bracelets go further — tiger eye, obsidian, lava stone, matte black onyx, labradorite, lapis lazuli, rose quartz, green aventurine — chosen for how they look and because they're the natural stones that don't interfere with a 13.56 MHz antenna. Both had to be true.

Dignity is a design specification. When someone with dexterity difficulties taps instead of fumbling a card into a reader, or someone who can no longer reliably recall a four-digit PIN buys their own coffee without help, the technology hasn't just worked. It's given something back.

Test three: who is actually standing behind it?

Almost nobody applies this test, and it's the one that matters when something goes wrong.

Our rings are accredited and certified by both Mastercard and Visa, and our tokenisation runs through Fidesmo — an established European platform, not a white-label mystery. Your real card number is never on the ring and never reaches the merchant; each transaction is represented by a token that's useless to anyone who intercepts it. There's no magnetic stripe, no printed number, no CVV on the back. Lose a card and you've handed over a readable set of credentials. Lose a ring and you've dropped an inert piece of ceramic that can be paused or deactivated instantly.

What a payment ring won't do

I'd rather tell you now than have you find out in a queue.

A payment ring lives within contactless rules, so you'll still need your card or phone for the occasional transaction that demands a PIN, and for anything online. It isn't a fitness tracker. And it's a ring, so size matters — which is why we ship a sizer, and why gifts go out as a voucher so the recipient can size themselves rather than have you guess.

If you want a health platform, buy a health ring. If you want to pay — reliably, discreetly, without ever thinking about it again — buy a payment ring.

So, what is the best payment ring?

The one that never needs charging, never draws attention, never exposes your card details, and comes from an organisation that will still be answering the phone in five years.

By that standard I'd argue for ours — and I'd argue hardest not on the technology, but on where it came from. RingPay wasn't designed in a lab and given a story afterwards. It was built because people we look after every day were being locked out of ordinary life by a piece of plastic and a four-digit number.

Everything good about it for everyone else — the tap at the gym, the festival bar, the fact that it simply works — is a side effect of solving that first.

Payment rings: your questions answered

Do payment rings need charging? No. A passive NFC payment ring like RingPay has no battery. It draws the power it needs from the payment terminal during the tap, so there's nothing to charge and nothing to fail.

Are payment rings safe? Yes, and arguably safer than a card. Payments are tokenised: your real card number is never stored on the ring or shared with the merchant. There's no long number, no CVV and no magnetic stripe to copy, and a lost ring can be paused or deactivated instantly.

Where can I use a payment ring? Anywhere contactless is accepted — shops, cafés, supermarkets, public transport, taxis and abroad. The ring uses the same contactless infrastructure as your bank card.

Which UK banks work with a payment ring? Some banks support ring linking directly; where yours doesn't, a free Curve account links the card you already use. You can check your bank here.

Are payment rings waterproof? Yes. With no battery and no charging port to seal, a passive ring is unaffected by swimming, showering or washing up.

What happens if I lose my payment ring? Pause or deactivate the token from the app. Your bank card is unaffected, and nobody who finds the ring can spend from it.
